Creative Magpie: Soul Poet Rachel Maullin

March 23rd, 2009

mn_leafHere is my first Creative Magpie post and to kick off this new blog feature I am focussing on a recently discovered poetry virtuoso Rachel Maullin. Rachel is a fellow healer and runs a complimentary therapy practice called Mother Nurture at the Boot Factory in Wolverhampton. When she is not doing therapeutic massage or reiki, Rachel is writing amazingly soulful poetry (see the end of the post for some delicious examples). I asked Rachel to answer some questions about her poetry and the creative process. Continue reading »

Introducing “Creative Magpie” Blog Feature

March 19th, 2009
Magpie Treasure

Magpie Treasure

The magpie in me finds many and varied wondrous treasures in the world and I have decided to feature in a blog post one person each week who I find particularly inspiring. They may be a textile artist (as I am) or a poet, songwriter/singer, ceramicist, jewelry maker or dreamcatcher. This blog feature will allow me to self-indulge in some creative candy and to share the love by bringing them to your attention too along with observations about their own particular brand of creativity. If you want to star in my Creative Magpie feature then please email me.

I saw a brilliant tv program the other night about Mike Reynolds - the guy who  designed and started building Earthships back in the 70′s in Taos, New Mexico. Earthships are built from old tyres packed with earth, old glass or plastic bottles and beer cans. They are self-contained eco-friendly units which have their own energy and sewerage and water capture and require little or no heating.  I found the program both inspiring and maddening.  I thought this guy is an absolute hero, pioneering the building of eco-friendly homes that don’t require the earth to build or to maintain and with little or no reliance on “the grid”. He is putting the power back into the hands of the people. Continue reading »

Retro Vibe

August 20th, 2007

I am still continuing with this retro vibe for now…just going with the flow of it. I came across this interesting article  by Marbeth Schon about New York artists using plastics in the 1940’s especially Armand Winfield who set up a workshop and gallery selling jewlery made by his brother and other artists all encased in plastic. The artists used lots of different materials such as found objects, using bits of shell, mica, jewels, leaves, petals, miniature paintings, glass, foil, wire and fabric. I think the pieces still stand the test of time today as interesting and innovative. It’s funny to think that a material that we take so for granted today and is used for so many items was so exciting and different to those artists back then.

Ideas about Creativity

March 12th, 2007

Creativity Article about creativity by one of my favourite coaches Mark Forster. Read also the comments about creativity by Learning As I Go – he/she is an artist and mentions a really interesting technique for developing and tapping into creative energy using a combination of music, sleep and reading. I am going to try this technique and let you know the results as I go! Has anyone else ever heard of this?
